SPANISH CLASSES

Our classes are restricted to a maximum of 6 students. This small class size enables students to interact extensively with the instructor and with one another, thereby enhancing the learning process. We also offer private instruction for students who prefer individualized attention or who have specialized needs.

Upon the arrival at the Linguistic Cultural Center COMUNICAR, students are given a diagnostic placement test to determine current knowledge of Spanish. The results of the placement test are used to assign each student to a class in one of the following five levels of instruction.

We provide 5 levels of instruction: 1. Beginners Level
2. High Beginners Level
3. Middle Level
4. Advanced Level
5. Specialization Level

1. Beginners Level: This level is for students who have never studied Spanish. Instruction focuses on intonation, vocabulary, listening, and speaking skills. Students completing the Beginners Level will acquire the ability to meet basic communication needs in Spanish.

2. High Beginners Level: At this level, students learn to use simple present, past and future tenses along with the command forms. The goal instruction is to enable students to begin to acquire fluency in everyday conversation.

3. Intermediate Level: This level is designed for students who already have a basic knowledge of Spanish. Instruction focuses upon complex grammatical structures such as the compound form of the indicative and uses of the subjunctive. Students completing the Intermediate Level will express themselves clearly both in conversation an in writing.

4. Advanced Level: At this level, students will integrate advanced grammatical structures and vocabulary with speaking and writing in areas of interest. The areas of interest will chosen by the student according to his or her professional, personal, or academic needs.

5. Specialization Level: This level is for students who already have considerable mastery of Spanish and want to perfect their use of the language. In the Specialization Level,  students will analyze literary selections, poetry, history, and contemporary writings from Costa Rica and Latin America. Special emphasis will be placed on the refinement of style, redaction, and orthographic accentuation. Students completing the Specialization Level will be able to talk and write about complex issues of personal and social interest.
